A mother elephant and her calf were passing through when the calf was caught in snares that had been cruelly set by poachers. Together with the park rangers, our team responded immediately. To ensure the mother’s safety, she was tranquilized so that we could attend to her trapped calf.

Despite hours of effort and coordination to free them both, the calf sadly did not survive the rescue process. 💔

This loss is a painful reminder of the constant threat that poaching poses, not only to elephants but to the entire ecosystem that depends on their presence. These wire snares, often laid indiscriminately, cause immense suffering to wildlife and undermine decades of conservation work.

At Munga Eco-Lodge, we remain deeply committed to supporting conservation partners, spreading awareness, and protecting the Livingstone wildlife corridor. Together, we can stand against poaching and preserve a safe, thriving environments for all who call it home.

We have transformed this into a call to action; to speak up, support anti-poaching efforts, and safeguard the wild spaces that sustain life for generations to come.

At Munga Eco-Lodge, guests don’t need to go far to witness this magic — in fact, it often comes to them. Nearly every day, elephants pass by the lodge, offering visitors a front-row seat to one of nature’s most awe-inspiring scenes — all from the comfort of their veranda.

A Gentle Reminder of Coexistence
These daily visits are more than just breathtaking moments; they’re a reminder of the delicate balance between humans and wildlife. Livingstone’s elephants move through natural corridors that have existed for generations. By protecting these routes and respecting their presence, we help maintain the harmony that allows both people and animals to thrive.

At Munga, our open design and eco-friendly practices are built around this philosophy of peaceful coexistence. We believe that sustainable tourism doesn’t just preserve the environment — it creates opportunities for people to reconnect with it.

Conservation Through Connection
Seeing elephants up close fosters understanding and appreciation for their role in the ecosystem. These gentle giants help shape their environment — clearing paths, dispersing seeds, and maintaining the health of forests and savannas. Yet across Africa, elephant populations face growing threats from habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict.

By supporting eco-conscious lodges like Munga, guests become part of a larger conservation story. Every visit helps promote responsible tourism that values wildlife protection and community involvement.

A Wild Experience Like No Other
There’s no greater privilege than watching elephants roam freely, unbothered and at home in their natural space. At Munga Eco-Lodge, this experience comes at no extra cost — just the reward of slowing down, listening, and witnessing the rhythm of the wild unfold before your eyes.

Harvesting the Rain: How Water Harvesting Helps the Environment

Water is one of the planet’s most valuable yet threatened resources. Across the world, rainfall often goes to waste, running off into drains instead of being collected and reused. Water harvesting is an eco-friendly practice that changes this: capturing and storing rainwater for later use in homes, gardens, and businesses.

Why Water Harvesting Matters
Rainwater harvesting reduces dependence on treated municipal water and underground sources, which are often overexploited. It helps prevent soil erosion, reduces flooding, and provides a sustainable supply of water during dry months. In regions that experience distinct wet and dry seasons, it’s especially important — ensuring that precious rain doesn’t go to waste once the skies clear.

Harvested water can be used for many daily needs: watering gardens, washing, cleaning, and even cooking when properly filtered. The practice not only conserves water but also reduces the energy and infrastructure costs linked to pumping and transporting treated water.

Munga Eco-Lodge’s Approach
At Munga Eco-Lodge, we’ve made water harvesting part of our sustainability ethos. During the rainy season, rainwater is collected from rooftops and stored in a JoJo tank, which holds enough to carry the lodge through the drier months — usually from late April to June. This water supports daily operations like watering plants, lawns and general use around the lodge.

It’s a simple yet powerful example of how eco-friendly design and mindful living can work together. By making use of what nature freely provides, Munga helps conserve local water resources and demonstrates that small, practical systems can make a big environmental impact.

Every Drop Counts
Water harvesting reminds us that sustainability often starts with awareness and small changes. Whether at home or on a larger scale, capturing rainwater is an act of respect for nature — one that ensures future generations can continue to enjoy its abundance.

Birds build nests in their branches, insects thrive on their leaves, and many mammals find shelter in their canopies. The rich biodiversity found within and around trees helps maintain balanced ecosystems.

Interconnected Webs of Life: The roots, trunks, and branches of trees create intricate networks that sustain various species. From fungi that form symbiotic relationships with roots to the mosses and lichens adorning their bark, trees are integral to a thriving natural habitat.
Trees and Photosynthesis

Oxygen Production: Through photosynthesis, trees convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, a process essential for the survival of almost all living organisms. A single mature tree can produce enough oxygen for two people annually.

Carbon Sequestration: Trees play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This process helps reduce the greenhouse effect and slows global warming.
Environmental and Climate Safety

Air Quality Improvement: Trees act as natural air purifiers. They absorb pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, ammonia, and sulfur dioxide, while releasing fresh oxygen. This improves air quality and promotes healthier living conditions.

Trees as Aesthetics
Natural Beauty: The presence of trees enhances the visual appeal of any landscape. Their varied shapes, colors, and textures create visually captivating environments that invite relaxation and contemplation.
Seasonal Charm: Trees offer a dynamic display of beauty throughout the year. From the vibrant blossoms of spring to the rich foliage of summer, the golden hues of autumn, and the stark elegance of winter, trees provide an ever-changing canvas of natural artistry.

Psychological Well-being: Studies have shown that being around trees and nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall mental health. The calming effect of greenery is a powerful tool for fostering a sense of tranquility and happiness.

At Munga Eco-Lodge, we recognize and celebrate the multifaceted benefits of trees. By preserving and planting trees, we contribute to the health of our planet, provide habitats for wildlife, improve air quality, and create beautiful, serene spaces for our guests. Trees truly are nature's multifunctional powerhouses, enriching our lives in countless ways.

Things to Do in Zambia: Experience Nature Therapy at Munga Lodge, Livingstone

In today's fast-paced, technology-driven world, finding solace and tranquility can feel like an elusive goal.
